Students of the Faculty of Urbanism and Architecture at UTM Visit the Traffic Monitoring Center
On Thursday, March 27, 2025, a group of students from the Faculty of Urbanism and Architecture at the Technical University of Moldova (UTM) took part in a study visit to the Traffic Monitoring Center (TMC) within the General Directorate of Urban Mobility.
The discussions involved the team of the "MOVEIT like Lublin" project, students and professors from the Faculty of Urbanism and Architecture, along with Dean Eugeniu Braguța and a representative from the General Directorate of Urban Mobility.
Olga Lozan, the project manager of "MOVEIT like Lublin," provided students with insights into the modernization of public transport in Chișinău, inspired by the experience of the Polish city of Lublin. The students explored how this project contributes to creating a greener, more accessible, and more efficient city.
Vladimir Butîrschi, the manager of the TMC, explained how traffic monitoring systems function, the management of traffic lights, and the optimization of public transport. Students learned how digital infrastructure can help reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety.
Eugeniu Braguța, Dean of the Faculty of Urbanism and Architecture, emphasized the importance of integrating modern technologies into the education of future urban planning professionals: "This visit provides our students with a valuable opportunity to understand the impact of innovative technologies on urban mobility."
What Did the Students Learn?
- How traffic data is collected and analyzed in real time.
- The importance of using intelligent traffic light systems to reduce congestion.
- The role of video and GPS monitoring in public transport safety.
- How e-ticketing works and the benefits it offers to passengers.
- How connectivity between suburbs and the city can be optimized through an efficient transport system.
During the visit, students participated in a practical activity where they analyzed real-life urban mobility scenarios, identified and formulated traffic-related problems, determined the necessary data for solving them, and proposed solutions for improving traffic flow and public transport efficiency. Thus, they simulated the practical application of the knowledge they had gained.
This initiative opens new perspectives for collaboration between academic institutions and local authorities, offering students a hands-on vision of modern urban planning and inspiring them to become part of the change they wish to see in their cities.
The visit was made possible through the "MOVEIT like Lublin" project – a sustainable public transport development initiative in Chișinău, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Municipality of Chișinău in partnership with the city of Lublin, Poland.
