A Major Step Towards Modernizing Urban Traffic: First Smart Sensors Installed at the Traffic Monitoring Center
The first smart traffic sensors have been installed at the Traffic Monitoring Center (TMC). The center was established in the autumn of 2024 with the support of the European Union, through the “MOVE IT like Lublin” project, implemented in partnership with the Municipality of Lublin, Poland.
Currently, four traffic sensors have been installed at the intersection of Dacia Blvd – București St – Ciuflea St, one of the most heavily trafficked areas in the city. In the near future, two additional sensors will be installed along the Dacia Blvd – Ciuflea St segment, at strategic points identified as critical for improving visibility of the local traffic flow.
The sensors used are high-performance devices designed to collect real-time traffic data without recording images or compromising the privacy of road users. Specifically, these sensors count the total number of vehicles passing through intersections, detect the direction of vehicle movement, and classify vehicles by type: cars, public transport, heavy-duty vehicles, bicycles, etc.
In the coming months, the data collected will be analyzed by experts at the TMC to develop a digital model of the intersection – a detailed and accurate simulation of real-time traffic behavior. This model will serve as the foundation for testing scenarios to optimize traffic flow, including adjusting traffic light timing, reorganizing traffic lanes, and implementing other measures aimed at reducing congestion, increasing road safety, and improving urban mobility.
The Traffic Monitoring Center is designed to provide technical and analytical support for decision-making in traffic planning and management. By leveraging modern technologies and real-time data collection, the center contributes to the development of a smart city with infrastructure tailored to the real needs of its residents.
The center was established under the “MOVE IT like Lublin” project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Chisinau City Hall in partnership with the Municipality of Lublin.
Background Information:
The “MOVE IT like Lublin” project – Sustainable Public Transport Development Initiative in Chișinău Municipality, funded by the European Union, is implemented through a partnership between Chișinău City Hall and Lublin City Hall in Poland. The project will run until 2025 and will support the transformation of the city’s public transport services into a more inclusive, safer, more resilient, and more sustainable transport system. The total budget of the project is €3,500,000, of which €3,325,000 represents the European Union’s contribution as a grant, while €175,000 is allocated by Chișinău Municipality.
